Like all of this website, this page is meant for fan fiction writers, not historians. It only scratches the surface of the subject, and it is simplified for practicality. The exact times and details of the German and Austrian alphabets in particular may be inaccurate. Notes: The Italian alphabet was compiled from several conflicting versions. The ARRL/Police alphabet will generally serve for any American police forces, should you somehow need one and not have one more specific to the particular city. The LAPD has its own.

For more spelling (aka phonetic) alphabets than you ever dreamed existed, along with some of their history, check out Brian Kelk's incredibly comprehensive list.
